Freiburg Minster and Christmas Market, December 2011
December 15, 2011 Classes are beginning to wind down, I’ve written most of my papers and given most of my presentations. I have some reading and whatnot to wrap up before tomorrow, when A— flies in from the States. He’s staying with me until the first week of January. I have a few more classes next week, and then we’re taking the train to Paris for Christmas. We’ll be in Berlin for New Year’s.
So, there’s no need for anyone to worry about what I’ll be doing for the holidays. I’m sending cards and letters out today (hopefully), if I get any of this reading done. Tomorrow at the latest. Sorry if they don’t get there before Christmas, but rest assured that I am thinking of everyone.
November 21, 2011 Two weekends ago, I went for a hike in the Black Forest with some other students. Here’s a a picture taken of me while I’m teaching an exchange student from China how to use my camera. Personally, I think she nailed it. Behind me is I—, a student from Estonia.
Friday I visited Munich with E—, another student from Oregon, and her host family. Saturday I went for a hike in the Bavarian Alps. Pictures soon.

When couples get married, they buy these padlocks, have them inscribed, lock them to bridges and any steel work here, then throw away the key. These were on the lake across from my apartment.

November 1, 2011 The transit workers have been striking on-and-off since I’ve been here. They strike about once a week, so you can walk on the tracks all the way home from downtown. The strikes are scheduled ahead of time, so city workers take the opportunity to do maintenance. Today is All Saints Day, so all the businesses and offices are closed (I don’t even have classes) and I thought this would be fitting.
Also, I added another class: Modernist Poetry and Prose. When I get back to Eugene, I will have taken more credits than I would have staying there.
